The Recycled Material Standard (RMS) has been developed by the environmental nonprofit GreenBlue. It enables participating brands and suppliers to celebrate their sustainability efforts that collectively advance the use of recycled materials. The standard establishes requirements necessary to assure the accuracy and transparency of claims with the support of a robust third-party certification system

GreenBlue is the parent nonprofit to The Sustainable Packaging Coalition, How2Recycle, CleanGredients, Forests in Focus, and the RMS.

The Opportunity

The Director is responsible for enhancing and growing the newly created RMS Program and serves as the primary point person between the RMS Advisory Committee, GreenBlue staff members, Certification Bodies, RMS participants, and other interested stakeholders.  The Director will be the public face of the RMS and will advocate and educate on its behalf. The position reports to the Executive Director of GreenBlue.

Job Responsibilities

  • With the support of the GreenBlue Executive Director and the RMS Advisory Committee, create the vision, set the strategy and position the RMS program for growth
  • Provide organizational and administrative leadership including financial management, budgeting, and operations
  • Lead business development and fundraising initiatives for the RMS
  • Lead critical near-term work streams covering:
    • Governance and Operations – Certification Bodies, Advisory Board leadership, and internal capacity building
    • Marketing and Communications – program content, trade show representation, and key stakeholder engagement
    • Program Expansion – Grow RMS participation and certificate holders and enhance relationships with existing participants
  • Develop and foster a collaborative relationship grounded in mutual respect and accountability with the RMS stakeholders including RMS Advisory Committee, GreenBlue staff members, Certification Bodies, RMS participants, policymakers, and other interested stakeholders
  • Support the GreenBlue budgeting process and help manage expenses for the RMS program
  • Attend GreenBlue SPC events and external events to represent the RMS program

Qualifications

GreenBlue seeks a mission-driven leader and administrator for this exciting opportunity.  The successful candidate will have a track record of leadership, management, and the ability to cultivate strong relationships with a wide range of key stakeholders.  The Director must have an entrepreneurial spirit and be self-driven to execute the mission of the RMS.  We seek a proactive leader who is intellectually curious and skilled in critical and creative thinking.

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree or Ph.D. preferred
  • Five or more years of senior management experience, non-profit experience a plus
  • Science and technical background in plastics, packaging, and material science
  • Strong organizational abilities including planning, delegating, and program management
  • Ability to collaborate and convey a vision of the strategic future of the RMS to staff, board, committees, and other key stakeholders
  • Strong written and oral communications skills
  • Strong public speaking skills
  • Experience in business development and fundraising
  • Experience in developing and/or managing certification programs
  • Experience in the recycling or similar environmental/resource conservation field

Location and Compensation

  • This is a full-time position
  • The position is remote, the candidate should live in the Continental USA
  • Ability to travel 20-30 percent of the time
  • Salary commensurate with experience
