As demand grows for environmentally preferable products, formulators are increasingly seeking sources of ingredients that will help their products succeed in the marketplace.  In order to help meet the need for ingredients with positive environmental and human health characteristics, the Green Formulation Initiative, a collaborative agreement between GreenBlue and the U.S. EPA's Design for the Environment Program, was launched in September 2004.

The mission of the Design for the Environment (DfE) Green Formulation Initiative for Industrial and Institutional Cleaning Products is to develop a one-stop database, CleanGredients®, containing I&I cleaning ingredients and their characteristics.*

These data will be presented to:

help formulators identify ingredients that have potential environmental and/or human health and safety benefits
  •  provide opportunity for manufacturers and producers of cleaning ingredients to showcase their ingredients with potential environmental and/or human health and safety benefits.

Our intention is to promote the development and marketing of green chemical solutions in the I&I cleaning product industry and to facilitate informed choice. We intend to make the resource accessible to formulators at low to no cost.

* By characteristics we mean functional properties such as critical micelle concentration, physical properties such as log Kow and associated environmental and health toxicological information.
